Weingarten Rights

If you ever have any issues at work – we want you to know this: Every UFCW member has the right to insist that a steward or union representative be present for any discussion or meeting with any manager or supervisor that might be related to discipline. Your UFCW steward or union representative can act as a witness and make sure a manager does not treat you unfairly.

Your workplace rights are known as Weingarten rights. To invoke your Weingarten rights, you must request your representative out loud. You can use the language included below to do so. If the manager refuses to allow the representative to attend the discussion, you may refuse to answer the manager’s questions. Any manager who disciplines you for invoking this right violates federal labor law.

Weingarten Rights:

If this discussion could in any way lead to my being disciplined or terminated, or affect my personal working conditions, I request that my steward or union representative be present at the meeting. Without representation, I choose not to answer any questions.
(This is my right under a Supreme Court decision called Weingarten.)
